August 19 Daily Update

Tyaughton Team

Aug 20, 2023

5:15PM

·       Received a message from Gold Bridge locals that the fire was at Hornal Rd moving North - this is false!!!  I've just spoken two people who are on Gun Creek and Tyaughton Rd.  They would have mentioned that!!!  So if anyone hears this do not stress it is not true.  I also checked my cameras which are acting up, but its clear there is no fire across the lake.

·       Tarn was just there at three - everything is good.

·       People are trying hard to get us information and its really appreciated but don't believe everything you hear.

4:39PM BC Wildfire Update:

In the last 24 hours, the Downton Lake wildfire grew to the northeast past Gun Creek and Pearson Creek. The fire has also grown significantly around the north face of Mount Penrose towards Roxey Creek and Mount Dickson.

Aug 18, air tankers were able to place retardant in the vicinity of Gun Creek. An additional retardant drop was planned to reinforce the initial delivery but was unable to be completed due to thick smoke and poor visibility in the afternoon. Structure protection resources have worked throughout the days and overnight periods to triage and implement systems in Gun Creek, Tyaughton Lake and east Gun Lake properties.

Additional Evacuation Orders were implemented Aug 17, with some residents refusing to evacuate in Gold Bridge, Bralorne and Marshall Lake areas. Road 40 remains impacted by the Casper Creek wildfire and will limit egress from these communities to the Hurley FSR to Pemberton.

The Incident Management Team managing the Bendor Complex is aware of impacts to structures along the northwest side of Gun Lake overnight. The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District will be conducting rapid damage assessments as soon as it is safe to do so and will release that information when available. BCWS is coordinating with SLRD to ensure this happens as quickly as possible. More information on the next steps will come from the SLRD shortly.

4:30 PM:

·       Structural protection units on Gun Creek rd

·       They are going to finish there and then assess Tyaughton!!!  Great news

3 PM:

·       Pumps running on lake - thanks Tarn and John!

·       We got a bit more gas to Tarn and John to make that happen

·       New Pictures from the lake below - thanks Tarn!

·       Very light wind!

2 PM:

·       From our team

·       Pumps are being run a couple times a day

·       Working on creative problem solving to get them gas (Thank you Gerry Waller)

·       Wind is from North and moderate?  (video below so you can make your own assessment)

·       As far as I know power is still out

·       We are trying to get people on site to assess our pumps and readiness.

From Gun Creek:

·       No Minto

·       No power

·       But its looking good

·       Will get an update on structural protection and pictures later hopefully.  They have limited communication.

1pm:

From the fire meeting this morning onsite:

·       Fire is sleeping right now

·       Its working its way down the east side of Gun Lake

·       They are building another guard today

·       Winds pushing it to the East

·       Winds carried lots of ash into Gold Bridge yesterday

·       General Store will open for limited hours to support workers

·       They are talking about building a machine guard to protect Gold Bridge

·       Winds likely switch back to the normal Sunday afternoon - South, Southwest.  But not supposed to be strong.

9am:

·       Bladders have been set up on Gun Creek Road and word of Structural Protection imminent arrival.

·       Power out on Gun Creek Rd and Tyaughton as of around 4pm yesterday.  BC Hydro also notes this power outage.  Power lines down at the end of Gun Creek Rd.

·       Hurley closed via roadblock at base of road on Pemberton side.

·       Getting around the community is still largely unimpaired.

·       Wind is low and from the North at 9am

·       Yesterday they were on the flank closest to Gun Creek Road and Tyaughton with helicopters bucketing and also the red retardant.  Made a significant impact will update if they do again today.

·       Wind is coming out of the North again, so good for us.

·       Forecast is for the wind to come from South, South East starting tomorrow.  Not supposed to be large winds but that's not good and probably factoring into the structural protection getting to gun creek road.

·       Minto is down on GCR and Tyaughton.  It is in Bralorne as well, unsure about other areas.

·        Doug Bonde, our Tyaughton Fire Chief, has agreed to lead the group that we are proposing goes back to lake, he has lots of experience which will be an asset to our pitch.  We've had a great response, so we will definitely have a team+

·       People have been sending information about their fire systems and efforts - awesome!

·       Stu Salter Update sent to me at midnight last night:

He was at gun creek road last few days.. there were 2 bombers spreading about 6 loads of fire retardant on the fire line on gun creek. There were also 2 helis working off of Pearson pond for most of the day. Last night the fire was pretty aggresive climbing up cinnabar above gun creek  hope the wind doesnt pick up and blow in our direction as the fire is at the elevation of tyaughton on the south side of cinnabar.
